1-day workshop to learn how to thrive your first two years operating a successful Homestead, Hobby Farm or Small Ag-Biz of your own.

About this event

From start to finish, you will leave the retreat with a proven checklist for success and the knowledge of all critical resource partners, and the confidence on how to navigate your personal and financial goals for a successful homesteading and farm operation.

This workshop was built by Roxanne Reed at Farm School on Wheels who knows what it is like to navigate ag-decisions and strive to help others navigate around common mistakes new homesteaders and business owners make in purchasing and operating a family farm business.

Session 1 (9:30AM-10:30AM)

Getting Your Foundation and Business Structure in Place the Right Way

Kickstart or expand your farm business by finding the best practices to protect yourself and your goals. Learn the fundamentals of the business operations and how they work. Learn to think outside of the box on which business decisions might be best for you.

Session 2 (10:45 AM – 11:45 PM)

Exploring Your Dream Farm and Setting Goals

Explore how you can learn your farm’s potential through analysis of all land and equipment so you can explore and move your business to its full potential. You will learn to think strategically in making decisions that will enhance your capacity and if you don’t own a farm, you will learn the checklist for success in finding the right farm for you.

Lunch! (12:00 – pm-12:30)

Session 3 (12:30 PM-1:30 PM)

Understanding Your Market and Customers

Learn how to find your niche, business concept and opportunity. Explore how you can fine tune your value proposition and begin to explore which customers are best for your business. Learn how to find the right customer for you –and keep them.

Session 4 (1:45 PM-2:45 PM)

Find the $ You Need to Build Your Agri-Biz

You will learn how to understand your business needs and where to find loans and grants in N.C. that can benefit you so that you can make smart and strategic decisions that will make you profitable. You will explore all areas of lending and grants so that you are confident in your decision making as you move your business into a profitable venture.

Is there any cost to attend the program?

No. All workshops and courses are fully funded by our community partners.

Do I have to be Native American to attend Business of Farming in Indian Country?

Everyone is welcome.

Do I have to own land, have a farm or homestead to attend?

No. You can be in the dreaming stage, in the process of obtaining land or acquiring a farm, or operating a farm of any size.

Do I have to attend all the sessions to get a Certificate?

No. Students must attend 60% of the live sessions.

How do I get the information from a missed class?

Students who miss a class will receive a recording of the session.

If I need help with certain topics is there support for me?

Yes. We have a private Facebook group where instructors and students can discuss coursework, business development, and provide feedback.
